California Animal Shelters
Where to find the next member of your
familyMillions of Americans have pets: dogs and cats
commonly, but also rabbits and dozens of other little furry
critters which bring joy and relaxation to almost any home. A
common problem, however, is what happens when your furry family
member strays too far from home.
These animals often end up at a community animal shelter,
or in the hands of a neighbor who will call the shelter to
possibly find an owner for the lovable little creature which has
wandered up to their doorstep.Another reason to visit a
shelter is to adopt a new pet for your house and family. Pet
adoption is usually less expensive than shopping at a pet store,
and also a very humane way to take care of an animal who might
have been neglected or otherwise treated poorly. Many shelters
are community operated, but some are totally volunteer operated
and receive donations for the care of the animals they house.
There are also several "no kill" shelters, where a stray animal
will be cared for until adoption, regardless of the time span
that animal is in their care.
On our Animal Shelter Directory page, you will find a list of
shelters organized by county. Please visit your local shelter to
adopt a pet, and make sure to involve your shelter if your
family's best friend becomes lost.
